“One Battle After Another” Brings Hollywood to Humboldt
The newest film from acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson, transforms the quiet corners of Humboldt County into the fictional battleground of “Baktan Cross.” Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Bob Ferguson - a former revolutionary forced out of hiding to protect his daughter - the film blends political paranoia, backwoods survival, and unexpected bursts of humor into a bold, genre-blending ride.
Murphy’s Markets in Cutten was chosen as one of the filming locations, and the scene shot there plays a surprisingly memorable role. There’s a moment when Bob, half asleep and disoriented, stumbles into Murphy’s in a bathrobe and tries (and fails) to remember the password needed to reach his daughter. It’s a small but vivid scene of the film’s darker comedic tone. The producers even commissioned our talented Cutten Store Manager, Ruben, to draw our beloved Redwood trees on our storefront.
The production didn’t stop there. Several other local landmarks also got to share the spotlight:
Eureka High School: Filmed during real school hours with local students casted as extras
Arcata’s pedestrian bridge & Cal Poly Humboldt: Used for key chase scenes and landscape shots
Raliberto’s Taco Shop: Called out by name in a scene involving a police sting
Sequioa Park: A central location for Ferguson’s forest hideaway
Babe’s Pizza & Pasta: Redressed as a fictional Mexican eatery
